Some websites do not open with BSNL Broadband

Many BSNL Broadband customers are complaining that they can't open some websites., There are two reasons for this problem.
  1. Bad DNS:
    The DNS is most easily understood as an address book for websites. It is responsible for translating the website names and email addresses of all organizations, governments and private entities into IP addresses, which are combinations of numbers that are difficult for people to remember, but necessary for computers to communicate with each other. When your computer needs to talk with the computer of a website, it uses the DNS to identify and find that website's computer.

    Due to overloading, the BSNL DNS servers fail to queries. if it occurs often then change to third party DNS server like OpenDNS, Google etc

    The IP address for Google are
      8.8.8.8 and
      8.8.4.4

    The IP address for OpenDNS are
      208.67.222.222 and
      208.67.220.220

    Once you have configured the OpenDNS, you have to test it. OpenDNS provides three different URLs that enable you to test and verify the successful configuration of OpenDNS on a network. The OpenDNS test URLs are If the sites are appearing on your browser, the configurations are perfect.

  2. Large MTU (Maximum transmission Unit).-
    MTU is the max size of each data packet which travels across Internet. Each interface has it own MTU value. If you make your MTU exceedingly small, you'll be able to avoid an MTU related problem, but loading a complete web page will take a long time. If you make the MTU too large, you'll see a variety of symptoms. Larger MTU ensures bandwidth efficiency but it can also choke interfaces.

    Unless otherwise set, Windows defaults MTU to 1500, or a lower value of 576 for external networks. 1500 is OK unless you are running PPPoE, want to use IPSec (Secure VPNs) or both, then it's too big. 576 is not efficient for the broadband/Internet; it's too small. if you have problems with your network a conservative MTU value of 1454 is recommended.

    You can check your current MTU setting by a little C# application written by Kevin Ottalini. Download it.

    You can change the MTU setting by a simple tool called Dr. TCP. It provides a window to the area of your registry that stores adjustable TCP settings. Read the procedure given below
    1. Download and run DrTCP
    2. .In the Adapter Settings, select the Ethernet driver and adapter used to connect with BSNL broadband.
    3. In the MTU box, type the 1454.
    4. Click in any other box, without changing the data there.
    5. Click Save and then Exit
    6. Restart the computer.
    Note:
    1. If you are tweaking the computer that is directly connected to the satellite modem, in that field, use the small arrow to the right to select ""Satellite USB Device"".
    2. If you are tweaking a network client computer, choose the Network Interface Card (NIC) for that computer.
